We are currently interacting with our screens more than ever. We are experiencing our work, our families, friends and close relationships, and our interactions with the world, the global pandemic, police violence, riots and politics through our screens. Then, in our down-time, many of us also turn to screens for comfort: to streaming services, social media, digital books and the youtube vortex of cat videos.
What effect does this have on our nervous systems? Our ability to orient to the present and feel safe? How we feel and understand our reactions and emotional responses? How we experience ourselves in our bodies (or whether our identities are now out-of-body experiences conducted by our social media avatars)?
In this workshop, you will discover tools and practices to re-embody yourself, both in your every day life and in situations of stress or trauma. We will cover:
what is a trauma response and what are the typical physical reactions to trauma
how to recognize a trauma response when it is brought on by a digital stimulus
how to be with that response, understand and validate your reaction to the stimulus based on your values
how to discharge the physical impact/energy of that trauma response
how to orient to your present surroundings to calm the nervous system
personal practices that inspire feelings of safety, control and empowerment in your home
how to interpret and value your emotional reactions as an “emotional compass” that helps you understand how the stimulus relates to your values and goals (or conflicts with your values and goals), without being overwhelmed or controlled by the reaction
how to make conscious choices about how you respond to the world: observe, engage or disconnect
Please note: There will be the option to share what you are considering with the group, but there will be no obligation to share any personal stories or experiences.
